πŸ’Ž *DO THE SCRIPTURES GIVE US A DRESS CODE?*πŸ’Ž
Many a times we try justify that the bible does tell us how to dress or give us an explicit or direct breakdown of how to dress but check out what the word of God says.. please follow through..
Per a BBC report, “Two opposing campaigns arguing about what women should wear are gripping the world.”
One stresses conservative clothing for women, while the other seems to be seeking freedom of choice in dressing for women.
What light do our respective scriptures throw on this issue? Is there a definitive dress code prescribed? Do the calls of modesty, propriety, and decency apply to both the sexes? Should we strictly apply dress rules given in the centuries-old scriptures in today’s society, or should we change accordingly with time and society we live in as the clothing has changed over time?
Is the purpose of dress to draw attention to ourselves, or to protect our bodies from various elements, or a religious duty? Should we be covered from head to toe? Is revealing the God-given body a sin? What is “modest” and “improper” apparel? What should our wardrobes contain? Is makeup, extravagance, braided hair, gold, pearls, cross-dressing, over-dressing, or under-dressing okay? Should our garments be tight or loose, transparent or opaque? What matters more inner or outer beauty? Is dress a morality issue? What does God want?. All these questions are matters that are attached to the Godly dressing etiquette we preach.
Here is what I have to say..
πŸ“ *DRESS RESPECTFULLY*
The Hebrew word for modesty finds its basis in humility. This term refers to modesty in behavior and dress. According to our Scriptures, “walk humbly with God” refers to modesty in dress and behavior (Micah 6:8).
πŸ“ *BEAUTIFY THE SOUL*
Scripture doesn’t prescribe any style of dress, but rather exhorts us to give attention to adorning ourselves with virtues like humility, sobriety, godliness and good works. Our worship services also inspire us with awe and reverence, motivating us to do the inner spiritual work of purifying our hearts and minds. Outward styles and social norms for dress and appearance are always shifting, but since the time of Christ our primary aim has not changed. Scripture testifies to this purpose, that the work of faith begins and is accomplished in the heart of each man, woman and child. In this matter the Apostle Peter’s words are relevant to all: “Let your beauty be not just the outward adorning, or of putting on fine clothing; but in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”
